Levi to marvel as Earth’s Mightiest hero.
Sandberg, who directed Lights Out (2016) and Annabelle: Creation (2017) will be directing from a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke for New Line.
Levi, who starred in the NBC comedic espionage series Chuck from 2007-2012, also appears in Thor: Ragnarok from Marvel Studios as the title character’s companion Fandral. On his Instagram account zacharylevi, the actor stated…
Honored and greatly humbled to be a part of the #dcuniverse by bringing the original Captain Marvel to life. I am beside myself with gratitude, not only for this opportunity, but also the incredible outpouring of love and support from so many of you out there in the world. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be in the gym for the rest of forever. 🙏 (amazingly cool art courtesy of @bosslogic) #Shazam
The Instagram post offered an image of artwork by Kode Subject featuring Levi as “Earth’s Mightiest Mortal” who first appeared in the February 1940 Whiz Comics #2 published by Fawcett Comics as Captain Marvel. Created by Artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker, Captain Marvel was the alter ego of a young boy named Billy Batson, who by speaking the magic word “SHAZAM” (an acronym of the six “immortal elders” Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury), could transform himself into a superhero with superhuman strength, speed, flight, etc…
Levi apparently beat out wrestler-turned-actor John Cena, Derek Theler (Baby Daddy), Zane Holtz (Dusk Til Dawn: The Series) and Jake McDorman (Limitless).
Shazam! will be the next DC Cinematic Universe movie, and filming is set to begin February 2018 in Toronto.
